Shanti's second report

Hola Everyone,

Today was my first day of school.I go to a Catholic School. I had to get up at 5:45a.m because my school bus comes for me a 6:30a.m and school starts at 7a.m.The uniform is so ulgy. As I was getting ready I kept saying to myself," I can't beleive I have to wear this uniform". I am the only coloured person at my school so, people were just constantly looking at me. I felt very uncomfortable.

When the bus came to my house everyone inside was just starring at me. I just sat down all by myself until we picked up the other exchange student. Her name is Florence and she from New York.

When we got to school we had to stand in the centre of the school and someone was talking to the student body. As soon as we walked in this guy from another exchange program walked up to us and hello. He said that they were expecting us.There are 5 exchange students from the
other program.

I don't have a clue as to what was said during the assembly, but they did sing two songs. I think one of them was the National Anthem. What I do know is that we were standing there for about an hour.

There are 3 exchange students other than myself in my class. When we got to class the teacher talked very fast. At first I was tryng to understand but I couldn't. I would only pick up a couple of words in each sentence. When my head started to hurt I realized that I didn't
understand anything and I fell asleep. We don't change classrooms so when I woke up there was a new teacher in the room. I understood a lot of what she said because she spoke slow.
I am able to communicate with my classmates and they help all of us with our spanish.

Today was just the orientation of classes. We also have to take English. Our English teacher told us that she knows the same amount of English as we know spanish. I thought that was very odd. In our English class today we had to introduce ourselves in Spanish and English. The
spanish kids were having a difficult time saying: My name is...... , I live.........and I have so many brothers and sisters. They were taking spanish from 1st grade. I thought that was really bad.

Today was not a bad experience for me, seeing that I thought school was going to be so strict and that I wouldn't like it. The kids eat in class, they wear as much jewerly as they want and they wear any colour nail polish.  I met two of the girls in my class before school started so they just introduced me to everyone else. In between one of my class, when the teacher left the room, about 4 of us ran to the bathroom. It was so funny because the Head Master (a priest) was standing right there and he was starring at us really hard as to say what are you doing out of class, so I said Hola and he waved back.Everyone was laughing. More than half the class got locked out after we had our break because we were late. The students from ecuador didn't care they we like who cares. We just stood there talking until the teacher opened the door. There were only about 5 people in the classroom. There are 29 students in my class. I just hope I learn spanish really soon. I am doing alot better than the other exchange students, except for Florence she can have a long conversation with people. They other students don't know any Spanish.  One of the girls learned the word Hola on the plane.

I'll write again later.
